Sony gives gas again: After years of rather shallow evolution, the Japanese are weakening in the smartphone market, now the technology giant wants to put it back on the road to success. For this, Sony has given its new top models Sony Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact a fresh design. Especially the Compact has potential, as the test shows.

"Xperia
New design, new processor, great videos: Sony logs back impressively with the XZ2 class. Although the larger XZ2 model is better in some ways, the smaller Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is the secret star. Because such a compact powerhouse with top camera, there is currently no other manufacturer.

Xperia XZ2 Compact Design: Small bumpers

While most manufacturers bravely follow the XXL trend, Sony defies the megalomania with just 13.6 centimeters long Xperia XZ2 Compact. Although not a dwarf, it is one of the smallest android on the market. By contrast, the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is two inches longer, but almost half an inch thicker. With a thickness of 12.5 millimeters, the XZ2 Compact is a bumpkin. A lightweight, the Compact version is also not, brings at least 168 grams on the scales.

On the other hand, many users struggle with the usual anorexic giant phones. If they then get a device with tangible weight and rounded back in the hand, they feel such a fat almost as a treat. In any case, as long as you do not put the compact with its protective case in your pocket, because then the smartphone is visible as an ugly bump. In the hand, both models are really good. While the XZ2 wraps in chic high-gloss glass, the matte plastic back of the Compact is much grippier. But very scratch-prone, as the diamond drill shows.

Technically, the Sony Xperia XZ2 (left) and the Compact version are very similar. Because the compact display is smaller but has the same resolution, it’s even sharper.

HDR as a magic word in videos

Most clearly the Sony’s differ in the screen size. Both have a display in 18: 9 format, but the Compact has only 5 inches diagonal, the large Xperia XZ2 is 5.7 inches. Both displays have extended Full HD resolution (“Full HD +” with 2160×1080 pixels), which is why the sharpness of the XZ2 Compact is even higher. With 709 candelas per square meter, both models offer enough brightness even in sunlight – the OLED technology of a Samsung or Apple iPhone X is missing anyway. Photos and videos show the Sony’s thanks to HDR technology with strong colors and contrasts.

HDR is the special strength of the Sony: As the first cell phones film XZ2 and XZ2 Compact videos in 4K and HDR. What sounds like TV gibberish, actually brings better picture quality. The new technology with 10 instead of 8 bit color depth brings on a UHD television in particular a much stronger color and thus much livelier videos. And while in the videos of other smartphones dark areas quickly drown in black, bring out the XZ2s many details. For photos, the 19-megapixel camera does a good job, especially in low light convince the shots. Praise also the good battery life of the two Sony novelties. Wireless charging is only possible with the big XZ2.

Like the big brother Xperia XZ2, the compact model takes high-resolution 4K videos with HDR thanks to its 19-megapixel camera.

Fast as a flash thanks to the new Super CPU

In the inner values, there is also a novelty: For the first time installed a manufacturer Qualcomms new super chip, the Snapdragon 845th Because the RAM is also well-stocked with 4 gigabytes (GB), the two Sony go to work rapidly. Good: The Japanese have effectively doubled the memory to 50 GB. If you still need more space and do not need a dual SIM, there is a memory card instead of a second Nano-SIM. This is especially advantageous for a large film collection.
