Microsoft ends features in smartphones

Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 users will no longer receive live tiles or push notifications. Another smash among Microsoft’s attempts in the smartphone market.

Microsoft stops some features of older smartphone generations. Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 will no longer receive Pushn messages on Tuesday, February 20th. As Microsoft explained in a blog, Live Tiles are also no longer updated. Furthermore, the feature “Find my Phone” will no longer work with devices with these operating system versions.

“Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0 have reached the end of support and therefore the services for these devices are turned off over time,” says the Microsoft blog. Newer devices with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile should still support these features.

However, Microsoft had recently announced that the provider Windows 10 Mobile contrary to previous announcements will not continue to develop, and therefore no new features for it to be published more. Microsoft justifies this with the fact that the mobile platform is no longer in focus. So far, there are only a few tight-lipped Twitter comments from product managers on this turnaround by Microsoft.

As before, these devices can be used. However, it is questionable how many users still use devices with these two operating system variants anyway.

In 2013, Microsoft had bought Nokia for 5.44 billion dollars and then equipped all devices of this manufacturer with Windows Phone. However, Nokia’s appeal as a brand was not enough to get a significant user base for the devices. After just over a year, Microsoft had made a billion-dollar write-off on the purchase. Meanwhile, the platforms Android and iOS share the mobile market among themselves.
